Stainless steel was discovered more or less by accident in England in 1913, when Harry Brearley, who was experimenting with a number of alloys, noticed that certain of his discarded pieces did not rust on the scrap heap. Investigating this, he found that the pieces contained a high proportion of chromium. This quickly led to the development of cutlery steels. Since then, it has been well known that stainless steels owe their resistance to corrosion to the presence of chromium. Other alloying elements, however, are added to further enhance their properties.
